Visit Pluscarden Abbey

Pluscarden Abbey as we know it today owes its foundation to King Alexander II of Scotland in the year 1230.

It is now is one of sixteen Houses of Benedictine monks in Britain. At Pluscarden there are 21 monks.

The Order of St. Benedict, first established by the Rule of St. Benedict in the sixth century, was the most widespread Order of monasticism in medieval Europe.

Strathspey Steam Railway

Whether you remember the days of steam from yesteryear or simply want a relaxing day in the Highlands, come and enjoy a train journey with a difference in spectacular Strathspey.

From its base at Aviemore through Boat of Garten and on to Broomhill, the railway takes you on a nostalgic 20 mile round trip along part of the original Highland Railway.

River Findhorn & Randolph's Leap

Randolph's Leap is named after the point on the River Findhorn (5 miles south of Forres) where its sheer rock banks are closest.

According to legend an ancient chief known as Randolph was chasing a Comyn, who jumped to the other side and escaped back to his castle.

The Comyn castle fell and the lands were turned over to Randolph and the name gradually changed from Comyn's Leap to Randolph's Leap.

The nearest settlement is Logie Steading from where walks along the side of the river can be taken.

This part of the Findhorn is renowned for its dramatic rocks, cliffs and waterfalls and peaceful surrounding pine forest.

Randolph's Leap is also an important wildlife area, with lesser black-backed gulls, woodpeckers and red squirrels.

Ardclach Bell Tower ...

Follow the A939 road to Nairn towards the valley of the River Findhorn as it makes its way from the Monadhliath Mountains to the Moray Firth.

Originally built as a model farm in the 1920's, Logie Steading has now been converted to welcome visitors to the tranquil Findhorn Valley, near the well-known walks at Randolph's Leap.

Hugh Miller Museum and Cottage

Miller House in Cromarty is the home of a superb new museum created by the National Trust for Scotland.

It presents Hugh Miller's many talents - including stonemason, geologist, writer, editor and church reformer - through a variety of exhibitions, with some of the artefacts reappearing after over 20 years in storage.

The fossil collection has been enhanced with several specimens on long-term loan from the national Miller collection.

You can also visit the 17th century thatched cottage where Hugh was born in 1802. An audio tour takes you round its cobbled yard and the Scottish wild garden, then inside the building for vivid descriptions, often in Hugh's own words, of its history and of generations of his family who lived there.

The Findhorn Foundation

Registered as a charitable trust in 1972, the Findhorn Foundation was formed by the spiritual community at the Findhorn Ecovillage - one of the largest communes of its type in Britain.

The creation of the gardens at Auchgourish [pronounced “och – gow – rish] began in 1994 with the growing of numerous different plant species from seed initially in a small nursery in the nearby village of Boat of Garten.

The Aberlour Distillery

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

The Northern Lights are a free light show in the night sky seen in northern latitudes - including the Scottish Highlands.

The phenomenon varies from a gradually changing glow along the northern horizon, to flickering curtains and patterns of light over much of the sky.

They peak every eleven years but can occur in any year and also at any time of year - except you need a dark but clear and preferably moonless night to see them at their best. They are caused by electrically charged particles from the sun (the solar wind) inter-acting with gas particles in Earth's upper atmosphere.

Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival (24-27 Sept 2010)

A great Festival held each year in and around Dufftown, organised by Dufftown2000.

Throughout the Festival several distilleries that are not normally open to the public invite whisky enthusiasts to tour their facilities and sample their products. Mini bus trips are laid on that enable connoisseurs of whisky to tour and taste an incredible array of fine malts from a wide range of distilleries. The most infamous of these is the marathon "Seven Stills Tour" that visits all of Dufftown's distilleries on a single trip with a dram at each and every one. Definitely not for the faint hearted!

But there is more - music, dancing, exhibitions, pipe bands and food and craft fairs. The best of Scotland's culture is on show alongside the celebration of its national drink.

Situated in the Cairngorms National Park, Grantown Golf Course measures 5710 yards, with a par of 70 and Standard Scratch Score of 68.

Though not long, it presents a fair challenge for every calibre of golfer.

It is naturally split into three sections - Holes 1 to 6 are played over flat parkland, holes 7-12 are played through moderately hilly woodland, whilst holes 13 to 18 revert to undulating parkland.

Achagour Fishery

Achagour Fishery is a series of man made lochs extending to some 7 hectares with a depth of between 10 and 14 feet at their deepest points.

They are fed by the Red Burn which flows through them, bringing with it all the nutrients required to provide the perfect habitat for both Brown, Blue and Rainbow Trout, with which they are stocked.

Although relatively new, they are already attracting numerous species of water birds which are taking advantage of the new habitat, and, in time, it is hoped that the lochs will become a wildlife haven.

The area has been extensively landscaped and a continued program of sympathetic planting is planned. The lochs are open all year on a catch and release basis, with a 4-bag per rod/session available at extra cost. The lower lochs are fly only.

Fort George sits behind its massive grass-topped artillery defences on an isolated spit of land jutting west into the Moray Firth at Ardersier, 11 miles north east of Inverness.

The Moray Firth is home to the most northerly colony of Bottlenose Dolphins in the world, one of only two resident populations in the UK.

Once again on Saturday 28th August 2010, the Dunedin Chapter Edinburgh Harley Davidson will be visiting Grantown on Spey.

The spectacle is due to begin around lunchtime, when over 1500 Harley Davidson motorcycles will arrive in town. The riders come from all over the world for this annual event, and each year there are more and more taking part. This will be the 6th consecutive year, and is is guaranteed to be the biggest ever!!

The bikes, and riders, will stay in the area of The Square, until about 4pm, when there will be a mass rideout, down the High Street towards Aviemore, when once again we say goodbye to our friends – until next year!!

Walk the Speyside Way

The Speyside Way is one of four official Long Distance Routes in Scotland.

It was first opened in 1981, to run from Spey Bay to Ballindalloch, with a spur to Tomintoul being added in 1990. A northern extension from Spey Bay to Buckie followed in 1999, with the route being further extended from Ballindalloch toAviemore in April 2000.

The route now links the Moray coast with the edge of the Grampian Mountains, generally following the valley of the River Spey.

Plans are well advanced to complete the route to Newtonmore, though no date for opening this last section has yet been set.

The Speyside Way is managed by the three Access Authorities along the route - the Moray Council, the Highland Council and the Cairngorms National Park Authority.

The Moray Council Countryside Ranger Service, based in the Visitor Centre in Aberlour, covers the northern section of the route (from Buckie to Advie) and can provide information for the whole route.

Grantown on Spey lies 15 miles northeast of Aviemore and is a popular destination all year round. This is a well designed Georgian town, built to the plan of the laird, Sir James Grant in 1766. The streets are wide and tree-lined with attractive buildings grouped around a central square.

The town is surrounded by ancient woodlands, much of which is community owned and which offer a unique habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. These Anagach Woods have way marked trails and there is walking for all abilities. There are also numerous other walks and trails around the town which offer wonderful views over the surrounding hills and mountains.

The town’s Square and High Street are lined with unique, independent and interesting shops and businesses selling everything from children’s clothes to whisky, fishing line to pottery. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants offering a wide range of meals, drinks and snacks to suit all tastes and pockets.

All in all it is a beautiful, charming town with plenty to do for the day visitor and which offers a unique opportunity to experience a traditional Highland town, dating from 1760s.

Lochindorb Castle

Lochindorb is located on the Dava moor and is only a twenty minute drive from the Steading holiday cottage.

Lochindorb comes from the Gaelic meaning 'Loch of Trouble' and the castle located on the loch has certainly had its fair share of that!

Dating back to the 13th century, it was originally held by the Comyns, but later occupied by the English and was visited by Edward I in 1303 when he stayed here for 9 days, hunting out on the moor. Later it was used as a prison and also a garrison for English troops.

At the end of the 14th century, it was gifted by Robert II to his third son, the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, Alexander Stewart, who rampaged around quite a bit of the local area.

Culloden - the final battle

The course of British, European and world history was changed at Culloden on 16 April 1746. It was here that the Jacobite army fought to reclaim the throne of Britain from the Hanoverians for a Stuart king. The British army was equally determined to stop this happening. The River Spey is the home of speycasting and one of Scotland's big four salmon rivers.

Anyone who has read any salmon fishing literature cannot fail to be impressed by some of the beat names on the Spey, including Wester Elchies, Delfur, Knockando, and Tulchan, not to mention Castle Grant and Arndilly. Every stretch is steeped in history and has seen thousands of anglers come and go.

The Dava Way ...walk the walk ...........

The Dava Way path links the historic towns of Forres and Grantown-on-Spey. The total distance from the centres is 24 miles (38km), of which 22 miles (35 km) are in open countryside.

Almost all of the route follows the old Highland Railway line and is off road and safe from traffic. From the Moray Firth this unusually varied railway walk winds its way from sea level up to Dava summit at 1050 feet (320 metres) before descending into Strathspey. Along its length it passes through a pleasant mix of farmland, woodland and moorland.

This variety makes the Dava Way path one of the best long distance walking paths or off road cycling routes in Scotland.

The Park has something for everyone - whether it’s simply admiring the ever changing views of the spectacular mountains, or walking with a Ranger-led group learning about the plants and animals in native pine woods. For the more energetic there are plenty of opportunities to go mountain biking, canoeing or climbing. The area also has a rich cultural heritage with castle, fortified houses and estates all happy to welcome visitors. Hundreds of countryside events, outdoor activities, guided walks and talks take place throughout the Park each year.

Grantown-on-Spey, the Capital of Strathspey is in the centre of the Scottish Highlands and only 14 miles from Aviemore. A traditional Highland town on the River Spey, it is a fine example of a Georgian planned town – one of the first to be set out in this fashion in the 1760s. It has many historic buildings, a tree lined Square and striking Georgian and Victorian architecture.

The town has an award-winning Museum which tells the story of Grantown’s beginnings, brought to life by an extensive photographic collections and audio visual display. Here you can find out about Queen Victoria’s royal visit of 1860, the coming of the railways and Grantown’s development as a popular holiday destination.

The town’s Square and High Street are lined with unique, independent and interesting shops and businesses selling everything from children’s clothes to whisky, fishing line to pottery. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants offering a wide range of meals, drinks and snacks to suit all tastes and pockets.

All in all it is a beautiful, charming town with plenty to do for the day visitor and which offers a unique opportunity to experience a traditional Highland town, dating from 1760s.

'Snow fair'

Its been a bitterly cold few days in the Scottish Highlands, and The Steading is being battered today by yet more heavy snowy and gail force winds! Even our neighbours (pictured above) are wondering if they will ever see their field again!

With the road to the town closed due to the drifting snow, we are spending the day keeping warm (we still have power.....well for now at least), and surfing the net (we still have internet connection....just!)

For those who are new to our blog, our cosy holiday home near Grantown-on-Spey is a beautiful converted self catering cottage set in the idylic countryside of the Scottish Highlands. In the winter months, our holiday cottage is a fantastic location for skiing on both the Cairngorm Mountain Range near Aviemore, and the Lecht in Aberdeenshire. Walking in a winter wonderland.....

These pictures were taken yesterday after another dusting of snow! The Steading holiday cottage is situated 1 1/2 miles from Grantown-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands, on the edge of the Dava Moor. Our self catering holiday cottage is an excellent base for anyone wishing to visit local visitor attractions in the Scottish Highlands. These include the Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, the Strathspey Steam Railway, the Cairngorm Funicular Railway, Loch Ness, the River Spey and the Loch Garten Osprey Centre.

Located on the northern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, our cottage is within easy access of these fantastic tourist attractions, and offers comfortable self catering accommodation with excellent facilities all year round. The surrounding countryside is some of the most picturesque in Scotland, and can be enjoyed by all - holidaymakers, walkers, winter sport lovers, birdwatchers and fishersman. Some of the highlights on the local social calendar include the Grantown-on-Spey New Year's Eve Street Party, the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival (29 April-3 May 2010) and the Grantown-on-Spey Highland Games (August). The Braes of Castle Grant

The Steading- our self catering holiday cottage in the Scottish Highlands, lies on the Braes of Castle Grant approximately 2 miles from Grantown-on-Spey. Castle Grant (pictured above left by Ronnie Leask) is the 15 century ancestral home of the "Chiefs of the Grant Clan". Previously named Castle Freuchie (which means 'Heathery Place', or 'Castle of the Heather'), it became the principal residence of the Grants in 1693. Clan Grant, like many Highland clans, had divided loyalties regarding the monarchy, and the castle was occupied by Jacobites during both the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Risings (during Sir Ludovic Grant's period of occupation 1743-1773).

As local legend has it, the ghost of Lady Barbara Grant, a daughter of one of the chiefs in the 16th century, is said to haunt the tower of the Castle. Lady Barbara Grant was said to have been entombed in the tower because she disobeyed her father's wishes in marriage. Work men working in the tower - known also as Babetts Tower - during refurbishment work in recent years, are said to have fled the Castle one evening after hearing footsteps, voices and a woman crying........ spooky!!!

In the middle of the 18th century, Sir Ludovic Grant married the daughter of the 5th Earl of Findlater and 2nd Earl of Seafield - James Ogilvie. Their son - Sir James Grant (inheriting the title of Earl of Seafield) founded the town of Grantown-on-Spey, and was the last chief to die in the Castle. Many years later on the death of the 11th Earl of Seafield, Castle Grant and the estate were inherited by Countess Nina. She was the last Grant to inhabit the Castle until in 1942 when dry rot forced her to move the Seafield residence of Cullen House - a Georgian mansion house.

The Castle, which has been extended over the years, was damaged by fire shortly after Countess Nina vacated the property and became derelict. Since then there have been a series of different owners, and following various rennovation works and plans to transform the Castle into a luxury resort, the Castle is now a privately occupied home.

The Castle and its beautiful grounds, are within minutes walk from our holiday cottage and can be accessed from either of the two beautiful gatehouses which are still occupied today (see right hand picture above). Well it was predicted yesterday.....and it has arrived...AGAIN! About 4 inches of snow fell on the Scottish Highlands over night, and more is falling today! With the wintery conditions set to continue for the next few days, we are happy to stay indoors, make pancakes (!) and watch all the goings on from a "not so snowy" Olympics in Whistler!

Scotland's Winter Olympic Accommodation!

To mark the start of the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver, we thought we would give you a wee taste of what's been happening on the local slopes here in the Scottish Highlands. This year we have had one of the coldest winters in 30 years, and with it......the best ski-ing/snowboarding conditions for over a decade! : ) Local ski-ing/boarding at both the Cairngorms and the Lecht (images above) have seen bumper crowds over the last two months, and Scottish tourist officials have reported that ski accommodation bookings are up by a staggering 500%!!!!!

With temperatures about to plummet again, and snow forecast on both the Cairngorms and the Lecht for later today, its a perfect time to get booked up for your stay at The Steading- our holiday cottage near Grantown-on-Spey in the Scottish Highlands. This first two photographs above are taken at Lochindorb located in the Dava Moor, approximately 15 minutes drive from The Steading. Lochindorb is home to the ruins of Lochindorb Castle, a former stronghold of the Clan Cumming. It is also a popular spot with fishers and birdwatchers, the latter of whom come to see the local black-throated divers and greylag geese. The third photograph is taken looking over the hills directly behind The Steading, at Ballieward. We are lucky enough to experience some of most spectacular sunsets here in the Scottish Highlands. We are also fortunate to see regularly Aurora Borealis - or the 'Northern Lights' as they are more commonly known as. The summer and winter skylines in this part of Scotland

are definitely up there with some of the most breath-taking in the world!
